Extermination Episode 80: Until We Meet Again (Part 2)
This Episode is The Series Finale of Extermination.
Only 1 hour remained until the Satellite was to fire off a laser that would destroy all of North America.
Valon had set up a laser of his own to counteract it. He would fire it at roughly the same time in an effort to cancel out the satellite’s laser. However, he had to do it at precisely the right time. So many things could go wrong. Valon and everyone with him prayed that this would work.
Valon said to everyone, “Hey Guys, if we don’t make it through this, just know that it was an honor to have known you all.”
Ken said, “Oh stop talking like you’re going to die. We’re going to make it through this.”
Valon said, “There is a strong chance that we won’t. If one thing goes wrong with laser, all this is for nothing. And even if it does work, the force from the blast might be too much for us. We have no clue what’s going to happen in just under an hour. All we can do is pray that this works.”
Alexis said to him, “No matter what happens, I promise you, we’ll all be here to face it with you. But we’ve come to far to just die now. We’re going to do it Valon, you have to believe that with us.”
Bella said, “This will work Valon, I know it will. That vision of the future I had wasn’t so we could come this far and fail now. And in a little while, you will see that.”
Valon said, “Thanks for your support guys, it means so much to me.”
Everyone was behind him as they waited for the moment where everything they’ve worked for would either be obtained or lost forever.
As the time passed, it came to the point where there was only 30 minutes left on the Satellite’s timer.
Ganner had Jaden, Sho, and Alister get back into the helicopter.
Jaden asked, “Where are you taking us?”
Ganner replied, “You’ll see soon enough.”
Ganner took out a parachute from the back of the Helicopter and attached it to himself.
Sho quietly said to Jaden, “Why is he attaching a parachute to himself?”
Jaden said, “He must be planning to jump from a high altitude. He must be planning to crash this thing, and jump out at the last minute.”
Ganner said, “I can hear you. And maybe you’re right, then again maybe you’re not.”
Alister said, “Stop playing with us.”
Ganner said to him, “Are you really in the position to be ordering me around? Well, I guess you might as well enjoy it as this is your last hour alive.”
Sho said, “No it isn’t, we have long lives ahead of us. And there is nothing that you can to stop that.”
Ganner laughed and said, “Yeah, I guess we’ll just have to see.”
He started up the helicopter and it went into the air.
Unknown to Ganner, Jaden had secretly been untying his hands and feet. He did it very subtly so Ganner wouldn’t notice. When the helicopter was in the air, he secretly did the same to Alister and Sho. He told them to act as if they were still tied.
He whispered to them, “When I give the signal, we attack him all at once. And remember, no matter what happens to me, you two stay up here.”
Alister and Sho agreed.
Jaden grabbed a grenade from the crate that was in the back of the plane. He placed it on himself.
Sho asked, “What’s that for?”
Jaden replied, “Don’t worry, it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
The click ticked and the timer went down to 5:00.
Everyone’s nerves were tense. They had no way of knowing what would happen when the satellite went off.
Valon looked up at the sky. It was beginning to get dark.
He said, “It’s almost time. The satellite is getting ready to fire.”
Bella said, “But it’s too soon isn’t it? And why is it getting dark? This doesn’t make any sense.”
Valon said, “I wish I knew the answer to that. It’s almost time guys. Everyone get ready.”
The click continued to wind down, to 4:00, then to 3:00, then to 2:00, and finally to 1:00.
Every could hear and feel their hearts beating fast. Sweat dripped down their necks. They’re breathing became tough. The strong possibility of death, although it had always been there, now became ever so real.
Up at the Helicopter, Jaden could see that it was almost time to take action.
He quietly said to Sho and Alister, “Alright guys, let’s do this.”
Within a second, they all jumped up at once and attacked Ganner, wrestling him from his seat.
He said, “You fools, your too late. It’s over.
Jaden said, “We’re not going down without a fight. And we’re not going to let you get away with this.”
Sho said to them, “I won’t let you do this Ganner. You’re done.”
Alister said, “This is payback for all of those that you killed. This is your penalty.”
The clock was now winding down to it’s last seconds. The satellite was charging its laser for fire.
Valon prepared to launch his laser to stop it.
The clock began to wind down, :10, :09, :08, :07, :06, :05.
Every second seemed to drag like an hour. Everything that was happening, it appeared to everyone to be happening in slow motion.
Jaden, Sho, and Alister continued to fight with Ganner, with all 4 of the fighters refusing to give in.
:04,
Valon said, “It’s now or never.
:03
Everyone prayed that this would work.
:02
Valon had to wait until the last second before he could fire it.
:01
As their lives flashed before their eyes, everyone braced themselves for the defining moment. Each of them remembering the events that had shaped the people they had become; the deaths, the betrayals, the happy moments, the sad moments, and the courageous ones. Everything they had ever lived seemed to flood their brain all at once. Sweat ran down everyone’s neck, their hearts were pounding. Everyone was faced with their own mortality. It could all end now, and nobody could assure that they’d be alive even another minute. And in that last second, the fear of that possibility coming true seemed to nearly overwhelm them until finally, that final second, which seemed to go on for hours was finally ended.
:00
Valon quickly blessed himself as he violently slammed the button on his laser, firing it into the sky. The satellite also fired it’s laser.
Everyone watched as the beams approached each other. They collided in the sky, causing a massive force to be unleashed. The force sent Valon, Bella, Dakota, Ken, Alexis, and Claire flying. Ken gripped his son’s baby-carrier tightly as his son loudly cried.
The force of the lasers colliding shook the helicopter. Ganner began to slide out of the helicopter. Before he fell out, he grabbed Jaden’s leg and Jaden was dragged out with him. Jaden managed to hang on to the helicopter with Ganner still hanging on to his leg.
Within a few seconds, the beam exploded sending another strong force into the air. Everything, the ground, the trees, buildings, they all began to rumble and shake. Then, as quickly as they had appeared, both beams were gone, and earth was still intact.
Valon woke up along with everyone else. They realized that they were alive.
Valon said, “We’re alive. The earth, it’s still here. Oh my gosh, we did it.”
It took a minute for everyone to take it in, but they all realized that they were alive. They had succeeded in stopping Ganner’s satellite.
Jaden’s hand was getting tired from hanging onto the helicopter. Alister quickly went to the driver’s seat of the Helicopter and stopped it from crashing. Sho reached out his hand to pull Jaden up.
Jaden knew that if he went up, that Ganner would kill all three of them. He knew that only one thing could save them all now. He knew what he had to do.
Ganner said, “You fool, you’re dead no matter what you do.”
Jaden said to Sho, “Sho, it’s been great knowing you. The time I have spent with you, it’s been some of the best times of my life. I hope that you’ll make a good life for yourself after all this is through. And I hope that somewhere inside of you, you remember me as a friend. I did some things here that I’m not proud of an am very sorry for. But one thing that I am not sorry for is my friendship with you and everyone else. You’ve been like a younger brother to me and I hope that you can have a good relationship with your new-found real brother.”
Sho said, “Stop talking like your going to die and give me your hand.”
Jaden said, “If I give you my hand, he’ll just come up and kill us all. It’s better if I just die rather then let him get to you two.”
Sho said, “But he has a parachute on, you don’t. He’ll survive and you won’t.”
Jaden said, “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that he comes with me. I won’t say goodbye to you, because that implies that we won’t see each other ever again. I hope to see you one day again, not in this life, but maybe in the next. So, I’ll simply say, until we meet again.”
Sho said, “No, don’t let go, I’ll pull you up.”
Sho and Jaden both had tears in their eyes. Alister didn’t have words to say anything so he just kept the helicopter in the air.
Sho said, “Come on Jaden, don’t do this to me. I won’t let you.”
Jaden said, “I’m sorry, but this is something that I have to do.”
Jaden let go of the helicopter as he and Ganner both fell at a rapid speed.
Sho called out, “JADEN, NO!”
Jaden yelled out back, “UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN Sho!”
As they were falling, Ganner’s parachute opened.
He said, as he was about to let go of Jaden’s leg.
Ganner said, “You fool, now you will be the one to die, and I’ll still kill your friends. Your sacrifice is in vain.”
Jaden said, “Check your belt.”
Ganner saw a small bomb there.
Jaden said, “We win, Ganner.”
Jaden broke free of Ganner’s grip and continued his rapid fall to the ground. Mere seconds after Jaden fell, the bomb on Ganner’s belt exploded, killing him instantly. His body was scatted across the sky.
Alister quickly maneuvered the helicopter to avoid the blast.
Jaden’s continued to fall quickly back down to the earth. He knew that he was going to die. The hard ground was just below him. His life flashed before his eyes. In the sky, he saw Manny, the boy he had come to call his brother. Manny reached out his hand for Jaden. Jaden reached out his hand to his brother’s. He closed his eyes as his body landed hard upon the ground, splitting open his head.
Alister landed the helicopter and Sho ran until he found Jaden. Sho kneeled down next to Jaden. It was obvious that Jaden was already dead. His head was split open and he was lying in a pool of blood. Sho felt for a pulse but found none. He tried everything he could to revive Jaden, but it was pointless. Sho began screaming and crying. He was going crazy.
Alister pulled him away from Jaden’s body.
He said, “Sho, he’s gone. I’m sorry, but he’s dead. There’s nothing we can do about that.”
Eventually, everyone found Alister and Sho. The country recovered from the tragedy of the past few days. Jaden’s body was soon taken away.
Twenty Years Later
(Narration by Sho)
Everyone who had come through these events felt a renewed sense of life. The entire downward direction of our lives had been stopped. Now, we had a chance to start over. It was a chance to build for ourselves, a new life. And this was an opportunity that each of us planned to take full advantage of. Each of us realized the fact that we hard here but for a brief time in the span of the universe. But as short a stay as we may have on this earth, we were given more time; and it was time that we intended to put to good use.
That day, it was the day we had all been waiting for. We were finally free of Ganner’s wrath forever. It was almost ironic that the exterminator was the one exterminated. But, the day was mixed with sadness at Jaden’s death. I had grown close with him and I never thought that he’d meet his end the way he did. But, I will always remember him, because his sacrifice, allowed so many to live.
Every one of us received a medal of honor for helping to take down Ganner. Jaden did too. It was placed around his tombstone. His funeral was sad. All of the others who died were also remembered at this funeral, Sherry, Leo, Chazz, Noah, Adam, Dimitri, Sam, Leon, Aaron, Kelly, Ryo, Brier, and Edward. All of them had died, and they all deserved to be remembered, unfortunately, Jaden’s was the only body we were able to recover.
Jaden’s funeral was a sad event for me. Everyone spoke and it seemed his death had hit us the hardest.
After Jaden’s funeral, our lives went on, slowly, but they went on.
Most of us went to complete our education.
Claire became a doctor, in honor of Edward. A few weeks passed before she found out that she pregnant with his child. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl; she named her Ava. Eventually, she bonded with and married Ken. They each had one child from a deceased person, and somehow, they felt they belonged together. Ken became a successful businessman. Together, the two had three more children, two boys and a girl.
Alister and Dakota married two years after the chaos had ended. They went on to have 4 children of their own, two boys and two girls. Dakota is a stay-at-home mom. Alister opened up a successful diner. Yep, I never saw that one coming either.
Valon and Alexis married not even a year after the chaos ended. They were in love and went on to start a big family of 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls, make that 10 children, I just found out today that Alexis is pregnant with twins, 1 boy and 1 girl. Alexis too, is a stay-at-home mom. Valon became a technician for a wealthy company. Yeah, big surprise there huh?
Valon and I were able to enter into a great brotherly relationship. Looking at us today, you’d never know that we missed out on so much time together when we were young. We miss Ryo every day but we push on.
I myself, I fell in love with Bella. Yeah, I don’t understand it much either. We get into our fights, but our love has produced 6 of our own children, four girls and two boys. I named my first-born son Jaden Ryo Truesdale. It was in honor of those close to me who died. Bella is an online accountant, so she can stay at home and spends time with the kids. I opened up a Deli, which became very successful and expanded into a larger store.
We all settled in the suburbs of Pennsylvania. Although we don’t see each other as much as we’d like, every year, we spend every holiday together and remember those we have lost. I wish I could say that our lives have been perfect, but I can’t. We’ve all had more rough patches to undergo, but we manage to get by.
Every year, every holiday, we each go to each other’s homes, and bring our entire families. We remember those we knew whose lives were lost. Our children’s childhoods have been a lot less stressful then ours were no doubt. But, we still tell them about what happened to us when we were young. It’s been a long time since then, and so much has changed since, but it still feels like yesterday, and one thing has remained the same. The friendships we established then, they are still here with us today. Even the friendships with those who have passed on, are still just as strong today as they were.
The words that I will remember the most are the last words that Jaden said to me. For me, those words hold special meaning. As children of God, we never truly have to say good-bye. With the hope of heaven following our brief time on earth, I can say those words to my friends and family who will leave my life for a time. That is because, with God, there is always the hope that we may meet again. And so, I have learned to never say good-bye, but rather, Until We Meet Again.
THE END
Author’s Note: It has been a great experience writing Extermination and I hope that you have enjoyed. And remember, we don’t have to say good-bye here. I have other series, and you never know when these characters might pop up again. And so my friends, until we meet again.
